Yup. Any one of us who has ever quit smoking (my hand is up) beat sugar addiction (my other hand is up) lost a ton of weight (I’m showing off my butt here) quit a shopping addition (see a pattern?) understands how Facebook locks in on the human tendency to desire reinforcement. Those dopamine receptors are powerful. Each time we learn how to say NO to something intensely compelling, as in the need for likes- which are appallingly meaningless- we grow balls. Pardon me for putting it so frankly but that’s precisely the kind of action that forces growth. It may seem small, but try leaving that phone at home all day. For a week. Yah. That’s what I mean. Facebook-and social media in general- sticks to us like brand new velcro. When we strip it away we are in many ways newly naked. When I canned this medium, I couldn’t wait for those two weeks to go by so that I could revel in the strength I found by telling them to go f*ck themselves. We have so many other options that ever so much healthier.
