You just nailed what happened to a very long term friendship of mine. Some years ago she got a dog, a small one. Suddenly EVERYTHING was about the dog. Every visit to her house was pockmarked with her obsession with the dog, where the dog was, how the dog was barking at a squirrel. We ceased having any kind of conversation whatsoever, including at restaurants. She insisted on bringing the dog, so that every few seconds she would harass, harangue and irritate the dog. That was the beginning of the end for us. She couldn't see what she was doing. I liked the dog, the dog adored me (because I didn't harass and irritate the holy shit out of it nonstop, it was a terrier and very independent). She decided that I needed to be told what to do with my own dog, which I'd had for years, having grown up with animals and on a farm. Etcetera. One of the brightest people I have ever known and her IQ went to mush. People do the same thing when it comes to kids.
