You can tell your mother that the vast, vast, vast majority of us are now self publishing, simply because the New York publishing houses only want to work with sure things and established writers. So how do you establish yourself as a writer if NYC won’t publish you? You self-publish. I did -2 books- both won multiple prizes, and that’s how you get established as an author.

Your mother is being ignorant. Not stupid, just ignorant. But she’s also being cruel. At such points in our development you and I have to learn NOT to share our accomplishments, and choose to only tell those who are dedicated to our success. Hard, but true. We have to let go of the need to have the approval of those who are incapable of giving it. This forces us to seek approval from the only source that really matters, which is ourselves. Otherwise we are chasing a carrot on a stick, seeking approval that is not forthcoming, and losing ourselves in the process.
