While you make a great many key points in this piece, this leapt out at me for multiple reasons. A white woman called me out this week for being racist, in effect, for using the short POC in an article I wrote about how to be more inclusive of diversity on Medium. For my part, having done diversity work for decades, even to the point of winning a national award for it, it strikes me as remarkable that people waste time barking at others about their perceived insensitivity when in truth, as with all things, it lies within themselves. I've been reading some very good work on Medium about how White folks are hijacking BLM to promote themselves; this is ever the case, and most are blind to it. For my part, Bridgette, the measure of our commitment, as has always been the case, is whether or not we put skin into the game. That skin means time, effort, sweat equity, social capital and shared commitment. Being an ally is NOT an Instagram photo. It is a day to day, moment to moment expression of commitment and inclusion, along with the hard personal work of being willing to put that magnifying glass on our own bullshit.
