While this was definitely not my experience of family, I enjoyed your point of view very much, and I also decry the critical comments. This is your legitimate take, just as you clearly validate others. I do not hear you taking a judgmental stance, but rather speaking to your direct cultural experience. I might suggest that a better word, maybe, to describe this is "interdependence," which takes into account the combination of individuality as well as need for connectivity. I've spent time in South Asia, enough to understand and appreciate your points. I valued the journey. As I write regularly about aging, the issues of how we treat elders is front and center for me. I can't say that one or another is a better model, but for damned sure the way we cast aside our old folks in the West is NOT the way to do it. We rob everyone of their wisdom, and older folks of the joy of being useful.
