While I get your point and that of the above commenter, I am largely talking about non-professional gym areas. If you’ve got people training at an elite level, they are not particularly like to be in your local Lycra Palace. They also likely have professional spotters, or training partners who know precisely what to do to ensure safety of those around them.

The point has far more to do with wanna bes, show offs and the grunters and groaners who really have no clue what they’re doing, and end up causing potential harm to those around them.

I might still argue, again I get your point, that even if you are fatigued, you and I have the responsibility to ensure that when we are done with a set, someone else doesn’t pay the price of our having pushed past our limit, and not made damned sure that we could handle the rep OR got a spotter to eased our bar to the ground safely.

We are still responsible. Period full stop. That’s a gym rule. The awkward shape of the dumbbells makes them completely unpredictable, which is why dropping them from any real height is very dangerous. You and I will have to agree to disagree on that one. All the experienced folks I know take safety seriously, not just for themselves for for those around them. That’s why we see it as a community.
