When my beloved Black mother developed diabetes, my Black sister Jackie wrote me to tell me that her White doctor was not treating her with respect. I made one call to that doctor, who worked in the small Southern town where I was born. The sound of a strong, well-educated WHITE voice transformed her treatment. It still sickens me that this is what it took to get her the care she deserved. The family was grateful but the lesson wasn't lost on me.
