What is so very sad to me, Toffy, is that these days when people ask where someone is from, it is all too often a prelude to an insult, and an attack on an accent. I LOVE being able to share with a woman from Central Kenya or a man from Croatia that I have visited their country or even know a word in their language. But with our judgement and arrogance we have turned an innocent question into a racist one, and people react with fear and anger. My intent is to share stories, and to give them the joy of having someone who has explored their world with great curiosity and joy. Americans are among the most ignorant in the world, and that is just another source of embarrassment for me.
