We share: being female. We share: being marginalized because of being female. We share: rape history, assault history. We share common humanity. Those things we can share. But when it comes to the idiocy of racism, this we cannot share. I wrote about being in the Arusha market one time with my guide. I was the ONLY white person there, and I was constantly being touched, crowded and had people demanding, begging, pushing at me, pulling at my clothing. It was one of the very few times I was able to have some sense of what it's like to be a minority. But it was fleeting, and I have the CHOICE to remove myself from the situation. Such experiences are great teachers for perspective. I felt the same way in the Lalibela market. I'm actually very happy in such places, but the perspective was very important to gain some kind of understanding. I will never know what it's like. But I can touch the outer edges of what it might be like. That's all.
