True, however, Thailand is hardly alone. the US is the #1 consumer, and what we buy, the world sells. I adore parts of Thailand, mostly the northwest, and outside Chiang Mai, which has exploded.
I think that it is foolish for anyone to assume that "paradise" exists anywhere other than in our own heads. I love Thailand dearly but have also committed to respecting its more conservative values, I practice Buddhism so it tends to fit my values, and I so appreciate the humlility and kindness. But I am no fool. As a visitor, I have a target on my back. But when I respect the country, try to say a few words and dress appropriately, I am treated very well.
