This is highly selective- in that sense that "contributing" is very individually defined. There is so much judgment about what contribution looks like, and in our society, if it isn't green and can be banked, then clearly, it doesn't have much value. Which is why we denigrate social workers and teachers and caregivers and and and and. There's a very powerful underlying message (to me anyway) every goddamned thing is tied to monetary value. If what you add can't be measured monetarily, then it isn't contributing. Doesn't make me right but it's a very strong impression.
