There was a PSA on television, sometime in the 1960s or so, that used the theme about being right: Yes, you can be right. DEAD right. This deeply human addiction, and it is indeed an addiction, is the cause for more divorces, wars, breakups, family squabbles etc. than anything else. It is a uniquely human compulsion. People will flat out die in a ditch to be right, including murdering an ex-lover for dumping them, or declaring war over a perceived boundary dispute. It is monumentally stupid, particularly since saying something as simple as “you have a point there” or “you know, you may be right” could completely diffuse the entire situation. The superior person accedes. The bigger person allows for other viewpoints. The most mature of us can see and value another side. With social media and the misleading impression that “everyone is on MY side here”, we have lost the ability to weigh, balance, and seek to understand. In other words, we are a world-not just a culture, a company or a country- but a world of emotional infants.
