The other observation I might make is the bit about music. These were lettered men, these leaders, and were expected to have broad educations as fit their standing. When Lucky Jack inspects his foe's rooms after they have taken the French ship, he comes across the Frenchman's burnt music scores and, if I recall correctly, a French horn. One hell of a difficult instrument to play. Music was part of a genteel education, but it's mathmatical discipline was also considered part of learning how to think. Oh, what we have lost in our need to specialize.
