The backlash against PC hit all of us, but this generation in particular. What is left of older generations is likely to still come after the iGens, who are even more at ease with their diversity of color, gender, preferences and fluid sexual values and tastes. That this scares the holy shit out of so many people is not their fault. It’s less about PC than the simple acknowledgement that our society is changing ways that few could foresee. There’s no need to put a judgement on those changes, they simply are what they are. A mature society embraces those changes rather than points fingers, brutalizes and shames. As long as we are willing to put evil old racist rapists and their rich, rapacious old white friends in the White House and in power, what, kindly do we expect? Tolerance? It is a harsh lesson in why it’s important to vote whether or not you are a huge fan of a candidate, but because sometimes it’s about your own survival and thrival if the wrong guy or gal gets into office. Hate has become a societal value in America, aided and abetted by evangelicals who love to hate but call Jesus, the personification of tolerance and love, their guiding light. You want to point fingers? If pressed I’d be tempted to isolate religion, which throws kerosene on the fires of hate and self-righteousness, and fears their own children for their choices, preferences, and beliefs. That’s not a generation. That’s a sickness. No acceptance there. No brotherly love there (unless you’re white and well to do). There are plenty of problems. Millennials ain’t the problem. But it sure sells articles.
Even for otherwise thoughtful magazines like Time, which should know better. But again, I’m just an old crank.
