Ted, the RICE protocol has been roundly debunked by the gentleman who came up with it, so I no longer use ice unless it is absolutely necessary. The ice part of it actually slows healing and has been shown to damage tissues. The body swells for a reason: we’re designed to do it because that’s how we heal. Yeah, it’s a pain, but the pain is also there for a reason: it’s how the body says slow down for a sec here. In most cases these days, barring a break, the advise is to keep moving the injury. I tape it and that works best. It’s harder, and often more painful but it works.
