Susan, this is one reason why the Bible is such a complex and iffy book from which to teach how to live. I read the deeply insight works of Reza Aslan, who is a religious scholar. He went from Muslim to Christian to where he is today, seeing God in everything. That is where I am. His journey is instructive. The last book of his that I read was http://rezaaslan.com/book/god-a-human-history/
It’s an eye-opener. Not for those who desperately need superstition, but it is for those who are seekers, which I am, and who want to understand what really is sacred in the everyday and mundane. For to understand that God is in everything and all of us is to understand that it’s all sacred. That is a very different way to move in the world.
