So I would challenge you to find in any of the more than two thousand articles on Medium and elsewhere the words, implied or stated, YOU SHOULD DO WHAT I DO, BE LIKE ME. First, they aren’t there. Second. they aren’t there. Third, you get it. If you feel the exhortation, it ain’t coming from me. Intellectuals and academics are hardly likely to want do do what I do, and nor should they. My version of going grey gracefully is mine. Yours is yours. Unlike influencer Joan MacDonald I wouldn’t have the cojones to tell the world YOU CAN DO THIS TOO. I don’t “NEED” to be a bodybuilder or athlete to prove my mettle, it’s what I love, have loved for a long time. Why you feel the need to make this comment is beyond my ken, but that’s your right. Your interpretation of what I write is yours alone, and your version of what I said bubbles up from inside you. I’m not the author, you are. I happen to love what I do, and at long last am giving myself permission to do what I love and am good at. Your critique of my choice is just as judgmental. Who is any of us to lay judgement on a choice of lifestyle? Nobody said you hadda be like anyone, Florence. I am highly motivated by people living their best lives. For some that means melting into a chair and giving, up which is not a best life in my vernacular. For others, it’s finally giving themselves permission to evolve into whomever they most wanted to be. How is it our business to judge that as “trying to prove our mettle?” Why is that not simply living joyfully? If my writing puts you off, for heaven’s sake, don’t read my stuff. It’s not for you. I’m not an academic or an intellectual. I’m an athlete, a bodybuilder for fifty years, and very very very VERY happy living the life that suits me. My message is to find the one that suits you. Your apparent issue with my lifestyle has nothing to do with me. I wish you the best in your choices, Florence, and think that there are many other writers far better suited to your tastes.
