Since I get to speak to and work with minority PHD candidates and grads every year, I am particularly incensed by the surprise those very smart and accomplished folks encounter when they introduce themselves as “Dr”. As if. You know where that is going. Many of them dodge enough bullets getting the damned degrees, then they end up in a hail of “Hail no, Black folk don’t get advanced degrees…” Confirmation bias.
