One of the best lessons of what happens when you consistently read Black writers is when you begin to really understand pieces like this. Reading MarleyK has been a real education, Johnny, in that regard, so that when I read this piece, I really do get what you're saying. It's hard to express how valuable it is to understand some of much greater subtleties and shadings within the Black community which really force us to stop seeing all Blacks as (----) which is ridiculous, insulting, simplistic, and lazy thinking. To that, while this is off-topic as it relates to Will Smith, last night I read this article https://drcareyyazeed.com/the-dangers-of-courage-culture-and-why-brene-brown-isnt-for-black-folk/ about Brene Brown (I am not a fan) and why she is toxic to Black folks. White women, and my friends among them, hang on her every word. She doesn't feel right to me and that article nails why. This is, again, why I read Black writers. If we're going to understand, we have to read far outside our comfort levels, and make space for those viewpoints which educate rather than stroke what we think we know as fact. Thanks for this.
