On one hand, it would be fair to say that a goodly number of those tweets are just as bad if not worse, calling for her murder. On the other, that does not in any way excuse the privileged white girl blindness, which is far too common in Western society. I am sorry for her experience but by the same token, Sean, ignorance is not an excuse any more. That level of tone deafness is deafening, and it persists. Our quarantine experience also has drawn the curtain back on ignorant privileged white girl attitudes, blindness and insensitivity. You don’t have to work in diversity, and I have for years, to develop any kind of awareness to what might insult not only a group of people but also an entire nation. A continent, in fact. That’s. Just. Ignorant. Brutish and appalling ignorance.
You and I share the propensity for humor which is one reason I like your material. There are certain personalities out there who set themselves up to be skewered, but this is different. I realize it’s very hard to ask people to think before sending out a tweet or an email or whatever, but that’s precisely what needs to happen. A modicum of emotional maturity. Some sobriety. A little goddamned common sense.
I knew nothing of this, for I am not active on Twitter, other than to fire my Medium articles in that direction. I stay off it. For this reason. I have no interest in making that kind of mindless mistake. We are all subject to it, which to my mind argues staying off the platform entirely. But that’s just me and it most certainly doesn’t make me right. I just know myself well enough to know I’m dumb enough to say something and promptly insert my size 9.5 English riding boot in my mouth.
