Nor am I. While it's validating at some level that it's consistent in this country, the implicit punishment for being solo/single is really awful. The world demands of women in particular that we partner or be considered less than. In my case, at grandmother age, how dare I show up without a passel of grandkids? I'm too busy planning a month in Thailand. A number of women write about being single on Medium, specifically Shani Silver and Yael Wolfe. I follow Yael for she's got some interesting takes but they don't fully address the ingrained and deeply troubling trends that society has followed to truly punish particularly women for not marrying or raising kids. I knew at three that kids were not for me, and my brief marriage to an alcoholic at forty confirmed my choice to stay single. It both fascinates and troubles me that the legislative trends and the tone and action of our politicized Supreme Court go a long way to further the agenda of those who find singlehood among strong, educated and politcally active women deeply threatening. They should be threatened.
