Matt, thanks for this. I’ve traveled a great deal, and mostly to developing countries. I specifically seek out the small villages and places far from the main cities. I avoid big hotels and prefer homestays. These experiences have taught me immutable lessons about the assumptions untraveled Westerners make about what it truly means to be poor. You and I can leave a barrio. They cannot. Those lessons inform my pov and writing. They are, in the highest sense, priceless.
