Let me give you another: Princess Buttercup, Robyn-Wright-Penn, in the Princess Bride: “My Wesley will come for me.”

I was pleased beyond belief to see this same supremely talented actress as a formidable Amazon general in Wonder Woman. I wonder if her Wesley could keep up.

I will take a big step here and point out that the Bible is similarly misinterpreted, with the parables excellent lessons in personal responsibility and admonishments to “find the Kingdom of Heaven within.” But it’s ever so much easier to manipulate people with far more simplistic interpretations. As a student of religious history, examples abound. The real Bible is full of mysticism and meaning, even after hundreds of rewriting by men who despised and feared women.

Real growth is sweaty work, an internal affair, with gobs of road rash. The end product is never in sight. At each summit, we discover another summit. But upon reaching that summit, we summon the resources for the next. The journey is the whole point, and no one can do it for us.

Not even Wesley.
