Indeed. Because we no longer reward courage. Nor do we reward truth. We vilify, which has much more to do with our self-loathing than anything else. We seem to hate what reveals what is ugly in ourselves. That is why journalism is the “enemy.” If the truth sets us free, then we as a nation prefer to live the dungeon, chained to our lies. Heroes are everywhere, but they also have to live their own lives. It takes a greater heroism among the rest of all of us to listen to what is painful to admit, wear the shoes that fit us, and do the work to clean up our messes rather than blame the messenger. A country that attacks its heroes is a declining nation.
