…at person’s character, but when something bad happens to us, it is due to unfortunate circumstances. It’s a psychological trick used to give ourselves the benefit of the doubt — one that we don’t always give to other people because it’s easier to assume that what happens to them is due to their personality defects, rather than the circumstances they find themselves in or to societal dynamics.

I would point to the recent public shaming of Shannon Ashley by Tim Denning as the picture perfect example of this very thing. I suspect you might also have this in mind. He lost a shitton of support over that piece of bullshit.
