I was rereading this this morning, after listening this past week to an NPR interview with now-Presidential candidate Marianne Williamson. Her very famous quote, used by Mandela in his inauguration speech, was all about who are we NOT to be brilliant? Therein lies the problem. While I absolutely agree, the problem is that people do feel small, and then commit themselves, with all their smallness, to pulling the proverbial rug out from underneath your feet. It speaks to the awfulness of our nature as humans that we cannot celebrate those who succeed and see it as a statement of potential for us all, but rather take it personally as a statement of their unworthiness.
