I think MarleyK says it best, Devon. At some point, Black folks have got to stop waiting and hoping for White folks to change. Nope. Dope. Some might, but your kid's kid's kids will be one foot in the grave before any kind of meaningful shift happens. She advocates, and I agree, that you do for yourself, your people, your community. Those who genuinely support you are already there. Those that don't, well, MK spoke to that all last year. You cannot change the minds of those who are already deeply invested. There are powerful psychological reasons why throwing facts at fascists won't make a dent. Only time will tell if all those loud White folks on the streets last year turn out to be allies or opportunists. If you wait, you lose. Way I see it, get a move on, carve out your own place. Perhaps one of the most classic examples of a very public figure who hoped for acceptance and the redemption he sought for being Black, brilliant, gay and supremely talented and well-educated was Andre Leon Talley. His is a very sad story. You cannot, cannot stand outside the castle gate and fucking hope. People will throw their sewage on your head (and they did). You gotta bloody well build your own castle.
