I share that sense of feeling untethered to a place or space. It’s disorienting, but by the same token it’s immensely freeing. While there’s a piece of us that always yearns to belong, when you travel enough you end up belonging to yourself. Home goes with you. That feeling is impossible to replace because you can settle in and make friends anywhere in the world, no matter whether or not you can speak the language. The skills apply to every area of our lives, not the least of which are curiosity, tolerance, humor, patience, and a high level of competence in almost any situation. You’d be hard pressed to find better life skills. You sure can’t get ’em in school.
