I love your last line. I wrote a piece on so-called “constructive criticism,” which I have a hard time with, because if someone is just waiting to pounce on you with a fly swatter to bring you down at some point it makes sense to both consider the source and question the motives. How do they benefit if you’re clobbered? You make an important distinction- those whose judgment and hearts you trust- this is key. Social media is full of supremely angry people who want to dump diarrhea on anyone and everyone who disagrees with them. I think it takes a fair amount of self respect to clarify the difference between what is genuinely intended to push us to excellence and that which is simply intended to rip us apart. I own that I draw criticism to me, and then it’s up to me to tease out what is useful, what is intended to do harm, and what is an invitation to step up. Thanks so much for your comments.
