I love this piece. I particularly appreciate that you acknowledge that allyship wears a great many faces. If people aren't familiar with what real support looks like they can slide into performative without realizing that slapping a black square on a FB page is meaningless. I keep a number of anti-racism writers in mind as I move through my day; for example yesterday I heard a terrific quote on National Public Radio. Last night I forwarded the link to MarleyK, because the Princeton professor I heard was underscoring the points she has been making for months. It is not mine to write about these things as if I understand them; it is far more effective for me to send articles, materials and suggestions to people who can use them in their own writing. I can write stories from my viewpoint, but I don't have the right to hijack the topic in order to get eyeballs. Part of the challenge, I think, is to consider what is appropriate, and to find ways of offering support that don't sideswipe, distract from or otherwise dilute the message.
