I love this. This is sister piece to one I read a few days ago stating that there are no Black people in Africa. If you’ve been there you know. The compulsion to corral folks under a simplistic heading makes it so easy to call that monolith Them. That spills over to immigrants too. I was on the phone with a VA operator, heard a familiar accent and asked. She hesitated, I am quite sure fearing censure. I had to explain myself. I’d just come from Kenya. When she understood that, she relaxed a bit. While she wasn’t Kikuyu, I was close in geographical proximity. That kind of shared experience is what makes my day. I live, thrive on and deeply appreciate the unbelievable variations on our humanity, all colors and cultures. But that takes work. We really are so very ignorant. We seem to possess little curiosity and an embarrassing lack of education. hell I don’t know shit either but at least I am curious.
