I do indeed listen to the young, and read them on Medium, but when it comes to life advice that one can only gain through practical experience, I do not listen to the young for the reasons stated, Kim. When those same people have had those views challenged hard by harsh realities, then talk to us. Because like everyone else I started out with great hope and belief in mankind. While I'm not totally soured, my belief in mankind got changed by multiple rapes, abuses, and the kind of education that being in the military and traveling the world gives you. All I'm saying is that youth has the advantage of having not lived long enough yet to have had their ideas challenged. When they are challenged, and they will be, let's see what sticks. Emotional maturity is what we have when we are willing to fight for our beliefs, pay the price life exacts for granting us some kind of peace (Amelia Earhart), and find our way to our true selves. One of my closest and dearest friends isn't forty yet and is one of the most sage people I know. But part of that is because he's aware, unlike most young people, of what he doesn't know yet. That is what makes him such great company. The great self assurance of youth is too often built on ignorance. That's not an insult (ignorance: we don't know. Stupid: we choose not to know and know we could know better). We're all ignorant about plenty of things; the trick is to recognize it and have a sense of humor about it, and when necessary, do something about it. The younger people are the less likely they are to understand the difference, particularly between data and information, and wisdom. Spouting information doesn't make us wise. How we apply that information practically every day is the proof. And that only comes with time. That's just my opinion but it's also borne out.
