I could highlight this whole article, Rebecca, as could many folks working in diversity. Different terrifies people, and even well-meaning people who have the superficial intent to expand their company's repetoire of talent have, at their most basic level, no intention of truly welcoming that incredible diversity of thought and being. While I don't know this from anyone else's perspective, my guess is that people are simply terrified at the idea - and this harkens back to your story about the twins' comment about your getting that job- that perhaps they were wrong about Black folks, that perhaps Black excellence isn't a rare mistake or zoo-worthy anomaly, but normal. What a thought. It would upend the end Patriarchal system. And my guess is that this is why it's so terrifying.
