Devon, one of my challenges is watching heroic movies about Black people (kindly, 42 is a favorite) which still center White folks as heroic because they opened doors. I am equally exhausted when Hollywood gives Oscars to Black folks for stories that focus on slavery, drug abuse (Training Day) etcetera. For my part, I happen to love Denzel in Equalizer, which doesn't have to have a white hero to validate it. You're not alone, and my Whiteness doesn't make me any more or less annoyed because of my color. I''m pissed off because it's dishonest. My own personal experience growing up with two families, one of them Black, taught me about heroes and sheroes that had nothing whatsoever to do with slavery or sports. Just decency, to say nothing of Black excellence.
