This “tough = worthy” outlook continues to largely be reinforced by Western culture, where perceived weakness of any sort is seen as a reflection on the moral character of the person who has had the misfortune to fall ill or to have had some other kind of bad luck, unfortunate circumstance, or been preyed upon by someone else.
