Clay, kindly, this SO important I hope you choose to do a whole article on it. I might, too, but at some point I have to start focusing on paid work. To this, though, the notion that engage in diversity, or allyship or whatever for the sole purpose of getting credit for it (approval) absolution (SEE? I'm not a racist) or get acknowledged for being heroic (kindly....being humble, being human are not exactly heroic, except that they are these days) all point to YOUR point about performative activities. BIPOC folks do NOT owe anyone a fucking hero button for finally showing up. By the same token we also don't need to beat folks up for being late, or being ignorant; that sends them in the other direction. It takes work on all sides. However I really think that pointing out this particular behavior, which was personified in part by so many folks showing up ONLY to be Instagrammed Doing Great Things only to return to laughing at racist memes or avoiding the hard work of evolution into a more aware and mature member of society, is important. Sorry for the runon sentence. You get it. Nobody needs to fail at allyship and make a Huge Big THANG with a cat o' nine tails. Like any other learning arc we will, I will, you will, we all will royally fail. To fail is human. To not get up and try to do better is defeatism.
