Call me crazy, Kris, but the biggest issue I have is picking winners, something, genuinely relevant, and worth polishing, as you say.
Vanessa Torre wrote a piece that I read earlier today wherein she complained about people who avoid living. What that reminded me of was when you suffered the loss of someone close to you, and you had a few comments that were focused on much the same thing. We avoid living, avoid life, live like terrified mice in our hidey holes and then can’t for the life of us sort out why we have no story ideas. If I recall correctly, Vanessa had also just lost someone, which is when it really hits you like a Hummer that we’re guaranteed NOTHING.
My coach this past week poked at me about skydiving again. I am going to renew my A license, but whether I go after the sport again is a financial decision. A part of me would rather either learn to hang glide or paraglide, or finish my VFR flight training. It’s far less about the bragging rights and far more that I really do love being in the air. To that he said, and I love him for this, what are you waiting for?(well, for one, I’m leaving for Ethiopia next Sunday, then Africa, then I sell and move….). He’s right. It’s not about being scared. It’s about not getting distracted. He said look, if you died from a skydiving accident RIGHT NOW would you regret the life you’ve had?
Not. One. Fucking. Bit.
That’s where the story ideas come from. Life. Be In It.
