Avis, thank you for that. Means a lot. When I read about superb accomplishments (be they women, disabled, people of color, makes no difference) the way I feel is that they were flying for me.
In John Denver’s heartbreaking musical eulogy to the Challenger pilots https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12pO9h3TRPQ, he coined a phrase that I am happy to pilfer for its rich gratitude. Every person who breaks an internal barrier, steps outside their boundaries flies for me.
The same way when Banner broke the four minute mile barrier, he was flying for all of us. Every athlete, every Everyman or Woman who pushes past a boundary, flies for me. Flies for all of us.
Those who see such things as statements of their inadequacy are a pall on the brilliance of humanity.
Some of us crash and burn. Some of us die. But we try. And that is everything. That is absolutely everything. To not try is to not live.
When we give others permission to steal our dreams by using abuse and fear, we have given our entire lives away. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I would vastly prefer public trolling that to live my life as an apology.
