As someone who sucked at waiting tables, got stiffed regularly for honest mistakes and put up with the same shit at various times and I am at least twice your age, I completely agree. Americans don’t like to admit there’s a caste system, but it would be fair to argue that the lowest classes of front line, food, grocery, restaurant, janitorial workers get all are growing, getting more desperate and more angry. One thing of value came out of my time in those trenches: I see people. I tip people. Thank people. Sometimes I will bring over a manager and compliment my server infront of them and then hand over a big tip. If I know tips have to be shared sometimes I handed a server more on the sly. Still do. Being there teaches you one hell of a lesson. Sometimes a 20 percent tip means better baby formula. Or for once, a candy bar. Does it matter? God-damned right it does.
