As I sit here in Nairobi getting ready to head out to the Maasai Mara for four days of animal viewing and hiking, I had to laugh. Not at you, not at all, but the distant notion of all the costs of skin care. These days as I age towards seventy, the only things I do are moisturize the inevitably wrinkling skin that comes both with time and the life of extreme adventure that I live. For thirty years I wore those fake nails, now I keep the $50 a month they cost me and simply take better care of the nails I have. At some point, and in this regard I can only speak for myself, you realize that the only things that really matter are preventing sun damage, hydrating (as in lots of water) basic cleanliness and honestly, asking ourselves why on earth we allowed ourselves to get sucked into pricey products that don't make a damned bit of difference? That last is to your point about neck and eye creams. Gah. That's nothing more than marketing. Someone is going to come up with a toe cream someday. Stay tuned. Petroleum jelly has been around a long time for good reason. Greasy, yeah, but for burns, healing and a layer of healing gel it can't be beaten. But it's cheap, doesn't have a lovely smell and the world's top models don't cop to using it. Therefore, it sits quietly on the shelves for those of us who eventually return to it for good reason. I find that the simplest things work best but that's just me. I have to use ONE thing I can fit into my backpack. That forces simplicity.
