As a writer, as an artist, and as someone who also has to make a living, this is our burden. How do we create something magnificent, but also pay the mortgage? My dear friend Jill, who is a financially successful potter (not words you normally see strung together) taught me something very important. It’s the 80–20 rule- you find what people buy, and produce that regularly to pay the bills. The other 20% is pure play, creative genius and joy. Those are our masterpieces. And every once in a while one or more of them also become best sellers. Thats because we have also done the hard work to earn the skill, the intelligent balancing to pay the bills in order to create time to be creative.
