As a perfect example of how far we have to go, over the last week we writers at Illumination have responded to a prompt about leadership. Every single writer, including two women, wrote ONLY using male quotes, male role models. I wrote a piece yesterday pointing that out, and listing plenty of my female role models, as well as plenty of other evidence around where gender inequality is bolstered and promoted. I am sick unto death of how we perpetuate our prejudices when as women we don't even acknowledge how brainwashed we are that when we think leader, we think Churchill. Not Madeleine Albright, or any of the women Presidential candidates, or Elizabeth I or anyone else who was just as powerful and badass or better than any male leader. One woman, who is a PhD and a leader herself, wrote about men, then about two women who wrote about other leaders, rather than speak to her own experience. It is damned hard to march forward when we keep shooting ourselves in the hiking boot.
