As a fitness writer, I am wholly on board this. There is NO excuse not to move, and the argument that it doesn’t help weight loss is puerile. As I bark at seventy, Matthew, I am an adventure traveler. I skydive, bungee jump, kayak, climb big mountains, river raft and most especially ride horses all over the world. You don’t do that if you’re not in extremely good shape. Again, people tell me I’m “just lucky.” No. You punch out a hundred men’s pushups every other day. You put in the time and dime on the exercise machines with the weights and then we’ll see who’s “just lucky.” Fit isn’t a size. It’s about strength and endurance and options. I am beyond exhausted having folks focus on weight loss as if that were the only damned thing. FIT is the thing. There are thin folks who can’t make up a flight of three stairs. I may be clumsy (guaranteed) but I can do things most folks couldn’t do at twenty.

I love articles which focus on the science, the facts, and the kinds of outcomes that are within reach. A six pack fitness trainer body isn’t likely for most of us. But fit is. Fit gives us options, and to your point, there are a shitload of lifestyle related diseases that I will never have. I like that you back your comments with science. Facts don’t lie. And one fact is just too clear: the ONLY thing that matters is whether or not we’re fit enough to do what we say we want to do. That takes movement. That takes work. When movement becomes joyful, it ain’t work. And that is how we’re designed: to move.
