Part of it has to do with the desperate need to believe that we live in a just world. No matter what evidence to the contrary, people will sink ever more deeply into denial and resistance, for to acknowledge this is to understand and admit complicity even if it was unconscious. To do that means to admit that yes, we have an unjust society and that it needs fundamental change. That means upheaval, discomfort, hard personal work. These days most White folks, although not limited to them, aren’t signing up for revolution. For that would have to include how we treat women. Children.
