And Sara, that is precisely why people cannot comprehend. There is a body of research around why people blame victims. Part of it has to do with the desperate need to believe that we live in a just world. No matter what evidence to the contrary, people will sink ever more deeply into denial and resistance, for to acknowledge this is to understand and admit complicity even if it was unconscious. To do that means to admit that yes, we have an unjust society and that it needs fundamental change. That means upheaval, discomfort, hard personal work. These days most White folks, although not limited to them, aren’t signing up for revolution. For that would have to include how we treat women. Children. Oh, and can I mention Black women and the infant mortality rate? For too many it’s just too big, too much. Great excuse to put the blinders on and say lalala.
