History tells us that Buddha was visiting a village during his many travels when he heard tales of a snake that was constantly biting people. Doing great harm and terrorizing everyone.

He walked out into the fields until he found the snake. He chastised the creature for his bad behavior.

The snake, ashamed, promised to do better. The Buddha continued his travels.

Some months later, Buddha had returned to the village. This time, he heard nothing of the snake at all.

He was a bit alarmed.

He returned to the fields, where he found the snake, beaten half to death.

“What happened to you?” The Buddha asked, in shock.

“You told me to stop biting,” the snake replied, barely able to respond.

“I told you not to bite,” the Buddha responded.

“I didn’t say not to HISS.
