A fait bit of this tracks for me and a fair bit doesn't. for example I loved Edge of Tomorrow, and surprisingly, I liked the two Reacher movies enough to buy them. That is despite the fact that as a serious Reacher fan, I howled with the best of them. Cruise's acting chops are better but he simply was a sock puppet in a gorlla's role. I found the Mummy way too silly and predictable. What irritated me a bit, Will, and I am surprised you didn't tease this out, is Cruises love of the asshole turned hero theme, which he milks, and the them of living up to father who was hero, which is also milked, that continues to be a theme. I admire Cruise for aging well, staying in shape and continuing to do many of his own stunts. I do admire the guy, and sure own a lot of his movies. As for whether he's a relic? I'd have to sit with that. I would acknowledge, although, that since I simply do not adore all the super hero franchise but for a few standouts (the original Iron Man, for example) I miss acting without the exhaustion of CGI and overkill. Ray Liotta is dead, other actors who could act are dead, and all too often I have to turn to films made a while back to remember that real script writers existed. About Iron Man, though, I watched Chaplin recently and was vividly reminded that even drug-addled, that man could act. He will not always be Iron Man to me for that reason alone. Perhaps that;s an age thing. Dunno. I liked Thor as much as the next guy but that's because I like chiseled abs. being a body builder. But then I was also screaming that Hemsworth should have been Jack Reacher. There's a call back for you.
